A thermal optics gift guide is usually written backwards: somebody picks five products they like and then invents budgets around them. I built this one from our own price list, so every tier below is a real shelf with real money on it. Yes, we make these — so take the enthusiasm with the appropriate discount and read the numbers instead. I have been selling night optics for thirty years, and the thing that decides whether a thermal gift gets used or drawered is not brand loyalty. It is whether the device matches the distance the person actually hunts, walks or scans. Prices here are ATN list prices, current at the time of writing.

Under $700 buys a genuine 256 thermal that finds animals at a few hundred metres. Around $2,300 buys the 640×512 scope most serious night hunters end up with. Everything in between is a question of how far away the problem is.

Why the 6th-generation line is the one to give

Because the cheap end finally stopped being a toy. Every optic in this guide, from the $549 monocular to the $3,955 binocular, is built on the same 6th-generation thermal core: a 12µm VOx uncooled focal plane array, SharpIR© AI image enhancement refining edge definition and contrast in real time, and Hot Point Tracking to mark the hottest object in the frame. Those three you get whatever you spend. The lens in front of that core is where the tiers separate — 7 mm of germanium on the pocket monocular, 50 mm on the long-range scope — along with sensor size, NETD and how far ATN rates detection. If the budget reaches it, this is the gift that ends the upgrade cycle. The ATN ThOR 6 640x512 | 2-16x pairs a 640×512 array at 50 Hz with ≤15mK thermal sensitivity behind a 35 mm germanium lens at F/1.0, and ATN rates it for detection out to 3100 m. The practical meaning of that combination is that the picture stays usable at the far end of the zoom instead of dissolving into porridge, and that faint signatures survive humid air where a coarser sensor gives up.

The rest is the stuff you only appreciate in the fourth hour: 2-16× magnification with 8× digital zoom, a 0.49-inch 1920×1080 OLED, Zeroing Freeze to hold the image at the moment of impact while you adjust, Recoil Activated Video that captures ten seconds either side of the shot, one internal and one replaceable 18650 for about 9 hours, a magnesium body rated IP67 and good from -30°C to 55°C, 6000 Joules of recoil rating and a 5-year warranty. At 830 g / 1.83 lbs it does not turn a light rifle into a club. Give it to someone who hunts hogs or predators most weeks of the season. Skip it for someone who wants to watch deer from the porch — that is a monocular purchase, not a scope purchase.

Under $700: a first thermal that is not a toy

This is the tier where a gift changes somebody's mind about the whole category. The BlazeSeeker 6 256x192 (TIMNBLS207G6) at $549 is 270 g / 0.6 lb, runs about 8 hours on its internal battery, and puts a 256×192 sensor at ≤20mK behind a 7 mm germanium lens at F/1.0. Its wide 24° × 18° field of view is the point: you sweep a field fast and let Hot Point Tracking flag what is warm. ATN rates detection at 345 m, which covers a back pasture, a fence line, or the treeline behind a camp. It is focus-free, IP67 and has 32 GB of storage, so there is nothing to learn before it works.

Step up to $689 and the ThOR 6 Mini 256x192 | 2-16x (TIWST6M215) is a riflescope rather than a hand-held: 15 mm germanium objective at F/1.0, 1200 m rated detection, 500 g / 1.10 lbs, a single replaceable 18650 for about 8 hours, Zeroing Freeze, Picture-in-Picture, Recoil Activated Video, ten reticle styles, and a 6000-Joule recoil rating on a Picatinny mount. Give it to someone who already hunts and wants to start after dark. Skip it if they mostly want to look around — the monocular is the better $549.

$700 to $1,500: the 384 tier, where reach doubles

The jump from 256 to 384 pixels is the one people feel most. The BlazeTrek 6 384x288 (TIMNBLT319G6) at $1,095 runs a 19 mm germanium lens at F/1.0, ≤18mK sensitivity, a 14.4° × 10.8° field of view and 1000 m of rated detection at 320 g / 0.7 lb. It is a scanning tool: walk the property, find what is out there, decide whether to bother.

The ThOR 6 Mini 384x288 | 2.5-20x (TIWST6M325) at $1,295 is the value pick of the whole guide. It carries the same 384×288 ≤18mK core, 2.5-20× magnification and a 0.49-inch 1920×1080 OLED — the full-HD display from the big scopes — with ATN rating detection at 2300 m, about twice the 256 Mini, for $606 more. Under 500 grams, roughly 7 hours on one 18650, SharpIR, Zeroing Freeze, PIP and RAV all present. Give it to the hunter who wants nearly everything the big scopes are bought for — the display, the shooting features, the reach — at 56% of the flagship price, and who can live with 384 pixels across instead of 640.

$1,500 to $2,500: 640 territory

Four times the pixels of a 256 core, and the first tier where you can zoom in and still believe what you are looking at. The BlazeTrek 6 640x512 (TIMNBLT625G6) at $2,085 is the hand-held version: a 640×512 sensor at ≤18mK behind a 19 mm germanium lens at F/1.0, 320 g / 0.7 lb, about 6.5 hours on the internal battery, 1000 m rated detection. The extra resolution is not there for distance — it is there so that what you find at 300 metres is recognisable rather than a smudge. Give it to a scanner: somebody who glasses more than they shoot.

And then the ThOR 6 640 2-16x at $2,295, covered above. Between the two, the choice is simply whether the gift goes on a rifle or in a pocket.

$2,500 and up: the long-range and do-everything tier

The ThOR 6 640x512 | 3-24x (TIWST6650A) at $2,595 is the same elite core behind a 50 mm germanium objective: 3650 m of rated detection and a narrower 8.78° × 6.59° field of view. It is the open-country answer — 550 m more reach than the 2-16x, paid for with nearly a third less width. For $2,995 the same scope arrives with a built-in laser rangefinder (TIWST6650LRF), which is the single most useful $400 in this guide for anyone shooting past 200 yards.

At the top, the Binox 6 Dual 640 (MSBNB6635A) at $3,955 is not a scope at all but a pair of multispectral binoculars: a 640×512 ≤15mK thermal channel rated to 3100 m, a 4K Ultra HD day/night channel with its own IR illuminator, a 1,000 m laser rangefinder at ±1 m, two eyes instead of one, 730 g / 1.61 lbs, about 8 hours on two 18650s. Under $100: the gift that goes with the gift

If someone in the family already owns a ThOR 6, the X-TRAC 5 tactical remote (ACMURCNTRL5) at $79 is the accessory they will actually use — Bluetooth control of the optic without taking a hand off the rifle. It is the one item here under a hundred dollars that is not a gimmick.

How to choose from this thermal optics gift guide: four questions

1. How far away is the problem? This decides sensor and lens, and nothing else should. Under 150 yards over a feeder, a 256 core is honestly enough and the money is better spent elsewhere. Out to 300, take 384. Past that, or if identification matters more than detection, 640×512 is the answer — and note that ATN's detection ratings, from 345 m to 3650 m, describe the range at which a heat signature registers, not the range at which you identify or shoot.

2. Rifle or hand? A scope has to be zeroed, mounted and trusted; a monocular works out of the box. If you are buying for someone who has never run thermal, a monocular is the safer gift by a wide margin — and it stays useful even after they buy a scope, because everyone needs to scan before they aim.

3. How cold and how long? Replaceable 18650 cells beat sealed batteries on a January stand. The ThOR 6 scopes take two and run about 9 hours; the monoculars in this guide run 6.5 to 8 hours on internal cells and top up over USB-C from a power bank.

4. What is the weight going on? 830 g / 1.83 lbs on a light bolt gun changes how it carries. A 270 g monocular changes nothing. What is a good first thermal optic to give?

How much should I spend on a thermal gift?

Is 256 resolution enough, or should I stretch to 384 or 640?

256 is enough for detection inside roughly 150 yards, which covers most feeders and back pastures. 384 doubles useful reach for around $1,100–$1,300, and 640×512 is what you buy when identifying the animal at distance matters more than simply spotting it.

What is the difference between a thermal monocular and a thermal scope?

A monocular is hand-held for scanning and is never mounted on a rifle; a scope carries a reticle, has to be zeroed, and is rated for recoil — ATN publishes 6000 Joules for the ThOR 6 640 2-16x and 3-24x and for the ThOR 6 Mini 256. Can thermal optics be used for anything besides hunting?

Constantly. Livestock checks, property security, finding a lost pet, spotting a leak of warm air around a window, walking a fence line after dark. Thermal reads emitted heat rather than light, so it works in total darkness, which makes it useful every night of the year rather than one season.

Do thermal optics work in rain and fog?

Better than anything that relies on reflected light. Heat passes through mist and light rain that defeat a spotlight, and the 6th-generation line adds processing that holds contrast when conditions flatten the picture. Heavy rain and dense fog will still shorten your effective range.

Does a thermal gift need a rangefinder?
