How the thermal channel works
It reads emitted heat, which is why darkness, shade and a ridge in the fog are irrelevant to it. The thermal side is ATN's 6th-generation engine: a 12µm VOx uncooled focal plane array running 640×512 at 50 Hz with sensitivity rated at ≤15mK, behind a 35 mm germanium lens at F/1.0. NETD is the number that decides whether a faint signature survives humid air, and ≤15mK is the sharp end of what an uncooled detector does. On top of it sits SharpIR©, ATN's AI image processing, refining edge definition and contrast on the live image.
ATN rates detection at 3100 m — detection meaning something warm is out there, at that bearing, and worth another minute of your attention. Two details make it faster than it sounds. The thermal field of view is the wider of the two at 12.52° × 9.41°, which matters more than magnification when you are sweeping a treeline. And Hot Point Tracking marks the hottest object in view, so your eye is pulled to the thing worth looking at instead of sanding down the whole frame.
How the 4K night channel works
It reads reflected light and turns it into the detail a heat map cannot give you. The day/night side is not a webcam bolted to the housing: a large 1.8-inch CMOS sensor shooting Ultra HD 4K at 3840×2160 through a 55 mm F/2.0 lens, with Night Vision Mode and Twilight Mode layered on top. In daylight it is simply the better picture — colour, coat pattern, whether that is your neighbour's dog.
After dark the onboard IR illuminator does the lighting. It ships in 850 nm and 940 nm versions, is replaceable, runs on Low, Medium and High, and Smart IR trims its brightness to the scene so a close animal does not wash out. Run thermal by default after dark, and in any weather at any hour. My sequence has not changed in years: scan wide on thermal at low magnification, stop on the first warm object, range it, then decide whether the answer matters. If the animal is far and all you need to know is that it exists and where it is heading, thermal is enough — do not waste the switch. Six palettes — White Hot, Black Hot, Iron Red, Alarm, Green Hot, Sepia — let you pick the one your eye reads fastest against the night's background. The one place thermal quits is a background at body temperature: a field that held the sun all day, a warm barn wall, an animal lying in the sun-baked open. When to choose the 4K night channel
Switch the moment the decision depends on what the animal is rather than where it is. Species, sex, size, whether it is even wild — those are answered with eight million pixels, not a heat signature. By day, invert the order entirely: the 4K channel is primary and thermal is the specialist you call for shade, brush and treelines, where an animal is hidden by cover rather than by darkness.
Dusk gets its own answer. There is still light, so thermal contrast is at its worst — the ground has been soaking up sun all afternoon and a deer standing on it is barely warmer than the dirt — and there is not enough light for a clean day image. Twilight Mode runs the 4K sensor with contrast and clarity held up through that exact half hour, which is when most animals decide to move.
